Illustration Friday - Superstition

Ever consult a crystal ball?

Because they're supposed to tell the future, if you're superstitious. I used to dabble in a bit of tarot card reading.....I have a pretty set right here with me. Hasn't been used in years. I can probably still remember how to read simple spreads. Of course, I bought it for the illustrations!

Illustration Friday - Scale

Look, mummy! Godzilla is sooooo huuuge!

A super quick doodle, with a fine nib pen.....see the rough, swirly lines? I could've cleaned it up better methinks. Tyrannosaurus rex looks more like Godzilla. But then my first attempt at the theme wasn't blog-worthy. *sigh*

Illustration Friday - Hats

It being Melbourne Cup week (because it really is a week of mayhem), with yesterday being Derby Day, I couldn't pass off this week's theme without a doodle. Because this is what all us girls get up to, when we're getting ready to go to the races.

Illustration Friday - Momentum

A good game of playground chase is always fun......

.....build enough MOMENTUM and you can fly!

I've been pathetic with the drawing. But here's my new attempt to be regular (and weekly isn't a big ask) again. Please excuse the smudge, me not being in practice and all.

Illustration Friday - Moon

By the light of the silvery moon....

Just a quick doodle, while I give the sewing machine and my hands a bit of a rest. I want to get back into regular drawing. Really I do!

Illustration Friday - Cars

Driving in "cars" with boys....or just one boy, as is the case.

I saw a similar toy car (which Sally is riding in) in a shop window just recently. It came in a sky blue, like an old 1950s Merc and a bubblegum pink. Very pretty!

Poor neglected drawings! Its been two long months. I'll try to be diligent this time.

Illustration Friday - I Spy

Private eye Sally, on her way to solving another mystery, spies upon the missing.....jam tart! Ha! You conniving confection, try to escape my clutches again and I shall eat you alive! Next...where is that fudge brownie hiding???

Can you tell? I'm in the middle of afternoon tea while I drew this. I couldn't help enlisting the aid of dessert sweets.

Illustration Friday - Wired

"Its music I found and I'm WIRED for sound....doo doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo doo" from old the Cliff Richard song whose title I can't remember. The music video had lots of young things on roller skates with walkmans and headphones. Can you tell how old I am?!

Edit: Had to replace the previous blue-tinged photo with a colour-corrected one.

Dang with the plans

Don't you think that sometimes the universe is just going against you? Or maybe there's a message that we're in denial about.

Three years ago, the geezer and I had agreed that we had just about had enough of Sydney....fast pace, increasing rat race culture, expensive, keeping up with the joneses, impersonal, I'm sure you've heard it all before....coupled with the fact that I had been in increasingly high pressure jobs for the last five years.

Anyway, we had decided two years ago to settle in Brisbane and bought a house there with the intention of moving within three months. Then we got pregnant...and don't get me wrong. I loved being pregnant and being with my family while this was happening. I couldn't have borne it all without extreme stress if we didn't have family or close friends around. When the bub arrived, we had reset our plans to move up to warmer climes until after she turned one, which is in about four months.

Looks like the proverbial spanner has struck again...we just found out today that the geezer's soccer accident two weeks ago may have done more damage than we thought. The doctor found a rupture in his achilles tendon, which may need surgery. Dang! Of course, this means a longer recovery time than we thought. So, Brisbane may have to wait another year.

Okay, I'm done with the rant! We'll just have to bleeping get on with it, yes. Geez, that feels better!

Oh, look! Its another drawing....

...which may end up being a painting. In fact, I'll make it my next painting.

And what other fabric have I been playing with today?

Just some rectangular log cabins....

...which have made their way into a corner of this pouch.

Illustration Friday - Hide

....and seek! A playground favourite. Children madly scurrying around searching out the best spots and I always ended up getting the dodgy hidey holes.

Illustration Friday - Communication

Two cans (or plastic cups will do, too) and a piece of string are all you need to have fun. I remember playing with these when I was a very young lass. And if you both hold the cans so the string is nice and taut, it won't matter how long or how far from each other you are.

Illustration Friday - Gravity

The GRAVITY of her situation had set in......Sally was locked out and mummy wasn't going to be back for hours! Pen and ink on a page in my sketchbook.

Signs of procrastination are revealing themselves in the studio *ahem* sunroom. I was being a busy bee cleaning and organising my boxes......

....trying to ignore the unfinished projects and making labels instead.

Illustration Friday - Crash

CRASH!....and the prized heirloom plate broke into a thousand pieces. It was the cat that did it! No really!

Illustration Friday - Sprout

Sally sprouted wings when she least expected....causing her to hide behind the wall from her friends. Nobody knew she was an angel in disguise.

As before, pen & ink on paper after the initial pencil sketch. Had a difficult time figuring out what to draw for this week's theme. I just kept seeing brussel sprouts in my mind, and that's just not my favourite vegetable.....yuck!

Also for the crafty bunch among you, Flibbertygibbet is hosting round two of the fabric swap she had last month. As usual I got there late and missed out last time. Being a fabriholic (yes I admit it!), I'm not going to let it pass me by again this time. Surf on here if you feel like taking part.

Illustration Friday - Red

Is she well-RED or well-read? I was against colouring the girl, but because of this week's theme I relented. She ended up with red hair and a red dress.

Also this other piece needed to come out of me today. I was about to sit down and do another layer on the little kid pieces, when there was just no inspiration to continue. Instead I was seeing the shape of coriander leaves in my mind. So I shelved the other canvasses for a while and started on this newbie. Number six (#3, #4 and #5, I'll get back to them later) on the summer studio challenge "Reaching for the light", acrylic, ink and paper on 5"x7" canvass board.

Edit: Had to replace the previous photo of the above piece with this one. Too much battle between the actual painting and the bright blue background.

Illustration Friday - Super Hero

This is the geezer......my hero *sigh*. Yep, he does all that including changing the bub's nappy. Sometimes he even pretends he's Elvis.

Also as an aside to the previous post, the geezer thinks that I'm not that anal at home. Case in point, I use the air filter as a dumping pile for my clothes.

Better late than never with this illo!

Illustration Friday - 80s

The first idea I had when I saw this week's theme was Wham, the music duo, then high waisted stonewash jeans, teased hair and those fluoro outfits we all had. But I was also a teenager in the 1980s and becoming more aware with what was happening outside my immediate sphere. So I thought to draw the one defining world event for me at the time, when I was on the cusp of maturity.

I remember picking up a copy of the Time magazine, which had a photo on the cover of a burnt out soiled baby soft toy hanging from the church steeple at Lockerbie in Scotland. This had made an indelible impression on me and I haven't forgotten.

* Apologies for the bad light. When I get the chance (and the dosh) I'll get the new hooley dooley camera and a scanner.

Illustration Friday - Buzz

"What is the name of the tallest mountain on Earth?".....BUZZ (ooh the anticipation!)

Thought to set this week's drawing at a quiz contest. I usually finish my sketches in pen & ink, after an initial pencil scribble. This one uses the same technique.

Illustration Friday - Phoenix

And she did the jiggy campering about the stage doing her "phoenix" dance. Apologies for the smudge! Accidentally wiped my sleeve across the page while the ink was still drying. Dang!

Illustration Friday - Peace

Apologies for the crap photo. Bad light today and I'm hankering to replace my old digital camera. Need a scanner, too, but can't have it all right now. Anyway, this is "Peace" for today's show-and-tell.
